Your TikTok export is a list, not a backup
When you request your data from TikTok — through Settings → Privacy → Download your data — TikTok emails you a ZIP file. Most people expect this to contain their favorite videos, their liked videos, maybe their reposts.
It doesn't.
The ZIP contains JSON files: structured text data listing every video you've favorited, liked, or reposted. For each one, you get a video URL, a timestamp, and maybe a caption. But the actual video file — the MP4 — is not in the ZIP. It's still on TikTok's servers, and the URL TikTok gives you is a signed link that expires.
What's actually in the export
Here's what you get for each category:
Favorites
- Video URL (a link back to tiktok.com)
- Creator username
- Date you favorited it
- The video's caption (sometimes)
Likes
- Video URL
- Creator username
- Date you liked it
Your own posts
- Video URL
- Upload date
- View count, like count, comment count
- Caption and hashtags
- The actual video file — this is the one category where TikTok includes the real media in the ZIP
Reposts
- Video URL
- Original creator
- Date you reposted
The pattern: TikTok includes the actual media for your own posts but gives you only links for everything else. Your favorites are a list of addresses, not a collection of videos.
Why the links expire
TikTok serves videos from its CDN using signed URLs — links with an embedded authentication token and an expiration timestamp. These tokens typically expire within hours, sometimes within days. The URL works when TikTok generates the export, but by the time you click it a week later, it may already be dead.
This isn't a bug. It's how every major platform handles media delivery — Instagram does the same thing, and so does X/Twitter. The signed URL ensures that only authenticated sessions can access the content, which is a security feature, not an oversight.
How to turn the export into a real archive
This is the gap UnplugMe fills. Here's what happens when you drop your TikTok export ZIP into the extension:
- UnplugMe reads the ZIP and finds every favorited, liked, and reposted video — usually in under a second, even for tens of thousands of entries.
- It starts downloading each video using your authenticated TikTok session — the same session you're signed in with in your browser. The extension fetches each video from TikTok's CDN and saves it as an MP4 to your hard drive.
- It organizes them into folders — Favorites, Likes, Your Posts, Reposts — so you can actually find things.
- It runs in the background. Start a download of 5,000 favorites, close the window, keep working. It keeps going. If your laptop sleeps or Chrome restarts, it resumes from where it stopped.
- It remembers what you already have. Run it again next year and it only downloads what's new.
The 5,000-video problem (and why UnplugMe doesn't have it)
Most TikTok download tools work by scrolling your favorites page in the browser and grabbing each video as it loads. TikTok throttles this — somewhere around 3,000 to 5,000 videos, the scrolling slows to a crawl or stops entirely. You're stuck.
UnplugMe doesn't scroll. It reads the export — a complete list of every video you've ever favorited, generated by TikTok's own database. There's no ceiling because there's no scrolling. If you favorited 20,000 videos, all 20,000 are in the export, and UnplugMe will download all 20,000.
How to request your TikTok data export
- Open TikTok in your browser (not the app) and go to Settings
- Click Privacy → Download your data
- Select File format: JSON (not HTML — JSON is what UnplugMe reads)
- Click Request data
- TikTok will email you when it's ready — usually within a few hours, sometimes up to 48 hours
- Download the ZIP file
- Drop it into UnplugMe
That's it. UnplugMe handles the rest.
What about the TikTok ban?
If you're reading this because of a ban scare or a platform shutdown rumor — you're in the right place, but you need to move fast. The export links expire. The sooner you download the actual video files, the more you'll save.
UnplugMe was built for exactly this scenario: a complete archive of everything you've saved, downloaded before the links die, stored on your own hard drive where nobody can take it away from you.
UnplugMe is a personal data portability tool. It reads your official TikTok data export and downloads content you already have access to, using your own authenticated session. Nothing leaves your device. First 50 downloads are free — try it here.
